An efficient synthesis of anthraquinones by a tandem Diels-Alder-decarboxylation-manganese dioxide mediated oxidation reaction was developed and applied to the regioselective synthesis of an azaanthraquinone. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
