Resumé

Chronic HCV infection is a major cause of HCC in Europe but although viral cure is possible the risk for developing HCC even after cure remains elevated. We previously revealed that HCV-infection impairs the expression of tumor suppressor PTPRD in patients and that PTPRD levels in non-tumor tissue adjacent to HCCs are associated with patient survival and tumor recurrence. Since PTPRD is frequently subjected to epigenetic silencing in various cancers we suggest that HCV may induce epigenetic modifications in the promoter region of PTPRD that may cause persistent PTPRD silencing and contribute to the observed elevated HCC risk in cured patients.
